Renowned human rights lawyer, Mr. Fred Agbaje, who died in a London hospital, yesterday has left his long time friend, Chief Edwin Igbokwe, in a terrible shock. Speaking on phone to newsmen, Igbokwe confirmed the news and described the sudden demise Agbaje as a terrible shock. He noted that the deceased had for long been a lawyer to his family.
Igbokwe said he had spoken with his friend on November 11 and was therefore deeply shocked and saddened.
His words: “I’m just hearing of it. I spoke with him on November 11th. For me to now hear, just few days after that he has died is a very big shock.
The day I spoke with him, it had to do with my wife’s anniversary. When I called him, he said he was on his way to attend a court case in Abeokuta, Ogun State. That was the last time we talked. Now only for somebody to call me to tell me that Fred was dead. I am just shocked by this terrible news. I never knew that he had a health problem.
Igbokwe described him as a good man and added: “He has been our family lawyer for a long time and we had a very good relationship.”
Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, who also commented on the death of Agbaje said that the country had lost “another voice that spoke for the people.”
