Nigeria has lost a true hero. Mr. Kayode Uaneroro, the legendary police officer who took down the country’s most notorious armed robber, Lawrence Anini, in the late 1980s, has sadly passed away. His death signifies the end of an era and brings back memories of one of Nigeria’s darkest yet most significant chapters in the fight against crime.

Back in the mid-1980s, Nigeria was grappling with one of its most dangerous criminals, Lawrence Anini, who was infamously known as “The Law.” Operating mainly in Benin City and throughout the old Bendel State, Anini and his gang wreaked havoc on banks, markets, and highways.

Their robberies were not just bold; they were often violent and left a trail of bloodshed. At the height of his infamy, Anini became such a menace that he embarrassed the Nigerian government, openly challenging the authority of both the police and the state.

The fear he instilled was so profound that markets would close down at the mere whisper of his presence. His reign of terror was deemed a national crisis, and military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida was said to have demanded daily updates on the police’s attempts to apprehend him.

The Man Who Brought Him Down – Kayode Uaneroro

When the Inspector General of Police was in search of a solution, one name rose above the rest: Kayode Uaneroro.

A black belt in Karate, recognized for his strength and discipline, a fearless detective known for taking down dangerous criminals.

Kayode was serving as the commandant at the Mopol Training School in Gwoza when the mission landed on his shoulders. He was exactly the kind of officer the country needed—disciplined, bold, and unwavering in the face of peril.

With a tip-off in hand, Kayode took charge of a 10-man special squad of plainclothes but heavily armed officers to hunt down Anini.

Within weeks, their search led them to a hideout in Benin City. The operation was quick and effective. Kayode himself shot Anini in the ankle, preventing him from escaping. That one shot put an end to Anini’s reign of terror and brought hope back to the nation.

The arrest was celebrated across the country, and Anini would later stand trial before being executed in 1987.
