A heartbreaking incident has rocked the United Kingdom after a Nigerian man, who moved to the UK in 2022, confessed to mu,rdering a 23-year-old British woman named Stephanie Irons, a former colleague with whom he had a short-lived relationship.

The accused, Adedapo Adegbola, 40, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, January 26, where he entered a guilty plea to a single mur.der charge. He is set to be sentenced on February 5, and the court has indicated that he faces a mandatory life sentence, depending on the judge’s ruling regarding the minimum term.

Emergency services were dispatched to a location on Westdale Lane West, Mapperley, on October 21, 2025, where they discovered Stephanie Irons deceased. Investigations by the police uncovered that Adegbola had gone to her home after their brief relationship ended and had fatally assau!ted her.  Adedapo Adegbola

Concerns were raised when Stephanie’s colleagues received alarming messages from her phone on the night of the incident. Unfortunately, by the time help arrived, it was already too late.   Adedapo Adegbola

According to law enforcement, Adegbola fled the scene, leaving behind bl0od-stained trainers and a jumper in the nearby streets. He reportedly traveled through Mansfield, Worksop, Sheffield, and Hull before returning to Nottingham the next day to turn himself in.

Despite surrendering, detectives reported that he remained silent during the following police interviews.

Judge Nirmal Shant KC informed the defendant that a life sentence was unavoidable, emphasizing that the only matter left to decide was “setting the minimum term.”  Adedapo Adegbola

“This is a heartbreaking case where a kind and compassionate young woman lost her life in terrible circumstances. After the attack, Adegbola didn’t even try to call for an ambulance; his only concern was to flee and get rid of the evidence.”

Stephanie Irons’ family was in attendance at the court, with prosecutors noting that they are currently preparing victim impact statements.

Outside the courtroom, this case has sparked tough discussions about emotional control, obsession, gender safety, and how violent cr!mes committed abroad can unfairly tarnish entire immigrant communities.
