A jury in England just declared 28-year-old Benjamin Katabana found guilty of murdering Nigerian student Uchenna Okirie in Norwich.

Uchenna packed his bags in Nigeria and traveled all that distance to the UK simply trying to finish his education. He was staying in Norwich when somebody took his life away from him.

What Actually Happened That Day?
The court listened to evidence proving that Uchenna got stabbed right inside the Norwich house where he and Katabana were both living together.

The two of them were staying in that exact same house when it all went bad. Paramedics came flying to the place immediately after Uchenna got stabbed, but when they burst through that door there was nothing left they could do—he was already gone.

The case dragged into court where twelve jurors showed up every single day listening to witnesses talk and watching evidence get presented about exactly how Uchenna lost his life. After they sat with everything they heard and thought it through, they walked back into that courtroom and said just one word: guilty.

This case caught fire on both continents—people throughout the UK couldn’t stop talking about it, and back home in Nigeria, thousands kept refreshing their phones desperate for any update ever since the crushing news first hit that Uchenna had been killed.

But for his mama and papa sitting in their house back in Nigeria and everybody who knew Uchenna—not from some news report but as a real person who smiled and cracked jokes and talked about what he wanted to become—hearing somebody in a courtroom say “guilty” doesn’t even begin to reach the kind of agony shredding them to pieces from the inside.

They’re stuck scrolling through old WhatsApp messages and pictures they can barely look at without breaking down, replaying his voice notes just to hear him talk one more time, thinking about their boy who stuffed everything he owned into two old suitcases, hugged them tight at the airport with everybody crying, and boarded that plane heading thousands of miles away because he honestly believed going to study abroad could change everything for him and for them—only he never made it far enough to see even one small piece of what he was working toward.

Both of them were staying in that same place when something went deadly wrong. Till this day, nobody’s figured out what really sparked it all that night, but this much everybody knows without arguing: somebody drove a knife into Uchenna and he bled out right there.

He wasn’t out there causing any wahala. He was just a young guy trying to pass his exams and collect his certificate. He flew all that distance to the UK hoping to make something of himself so his family back home could hold their heads high and tell people “that’s our son.” He carried dreams that wouldn’t let him rest some nights, thinking hard about the future he was grinding toward. He left behind a mother and father in Nigeria—people who got down on their knees every single night praying and fasting for him, picturing the day their son would step back through that door grinning ear to ear with all his struggles finally paying off.

That day’s buried now.
