Outrage as federal government turn to WAEC and NECO exams, increase fees to N50,000 has been approved by the Federal Government, sparking intense reactions from parents across Nigeria.
“The Federal Government has just jacked up the WAEC and NECO registration fees to a flat N50,000 starting in 2027. That is a crazy 82% jump from the N27,500 parents used to pay.
With the way things are already so expensive in this country, forcing struggling families to cough up 50k just for their kids to write secondary school exams is a massive blow.”
Millions of ordinary Nigerian parents are waking up to a tough financial reality following a quiet directive from the Federal Ministry of Education. The government has formally sanctioned a massive spike in the registration costs for the nation’s two primary senior secondary school leaving certificates.

Starting from the 2027 examination cycle, every single internal candidate registering for either the West African Examinations Council or National Examinations Council tests will have to cough up a flat rate of N50,000. This sudden upward harmonization completely alters the affordability of public education for low-income households.
The decision breaks a long-standing pricing gap between the two regional and national testing bodies. “Before this announcement, WAEC was sitting at around N27,000 and NECO was a bit higher at roughly N30,000. Now, the government has just decided to sweep all of that away and slap a flat N50,000 on both. No difference between them anymore—just one price, and it’s the highest one.”
A ministry memo signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Adeniji Ibrahim, revealed that the hike came after the examination bodies requested an upward review to cope with modern operational realities and logistics costs. Education officials have already instructed all secondary schools and state ministries across the federation to prepare stakeholders for the implementation timeline.
This steep price adjustment hits the public at a time when the broader promises of the current administration are coming under intense scrutiny. “It’s hard not to think back to all those campaign speeches about free and affordable education. People voted with those promises in their hearts. Outrage as federal government
Now, those same families are sitting at home trying to figure out how to find N50,000 for an exam fee while the price of everything else keeps going up and salaries haven’t moved an inch. Education experts and community voices are already warning that this policy is going to push a lot of children out of the system entirely.” Outrage as federal government
There are deep worries that pushing the combined cost of these mandatory final exams to N100,000 for a single child writing both will inevitably force thousands of brilliant, underprivileged students out of the schooling system entirely. Outrage as federal government
For states that traditionally subsidize or fully clear these registration balances for their public school students, this massive WAEC and NECO exam fee increase is bound to heavily strain local treasuries and balloon state-level debts owed to the regional testing bodies.
