The counterfeit alcohol operation was uncovered during a raid by operatives of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate following what the agency described as credible intelligence.
According to NAFDAC, the operation led to the discovery of more than 20 illegal stores allegedly used for counterfeit alcohol operation and other unlawful activities within the complex.
The agency said its operatives found suspects blending and counterfeiting popular alcoholic beverage brands, revalidating expired and unsafe drinks for resale, and storing banned imported products.
NAFDAC disclosed that two suspects were arrested during the raid, while the seized products were evacuated from the premises. The agency did not identify the suspects or provide further details about their identities.
The counterfeit alcohol operation has raised concerns about the circulation of adulterated, expired and unapproved alcoholic beverages in the market, which could pose risks to consumers in Nigeria
