Ecuadorian priest d!es after a large crucifix falls on him during a livestreamed Mass in Guayaquil. The Archdiocese has confirmed his de@th.
A Catholic priest in Ecuador is de@d, and the way it happened is the kind of thing that’s genuinely hard to process. Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was right there, in the middle of Mass at a church in Guayaquil, when a massive wooden crucifix broke loose from behind the altar and fell on him.
It happened on Saturday, October 17, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, the very parish he’d served as priest. And here’s the part that makes it sting even more. The whole service was being streamed live at that exact moment.
About 27 minutes into the broadcast, that large cross, the one with the statue of Jesus Christ mounted behind the altar, just gave way out of nowhere. He was leading the congregation in prayer one second, and the next, the whole structure came crashing down on him. The service just stopped. Completely.
All of it got captured on the livestream. You can actually hear the panic in people’s voices the second it happened, the scramble as they rushed toward the altar to help him. That clip has since traveled all over social media, and honestly, it’s the kind of footage that sits heavy with you after you’ve watched it once.

It was Sunday when the Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death publicly. Grief filled the statement, along with prayers and condolences directed at his religious community, his family, and the people who knew him.
Sánchez belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known to most simply as the Redemptorists. He’d spent his time serving within the Central Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Guayaquil, doing his work the way most priests do, quietly, faithfully, until that one Saturday changed everything in an instant nobody saw coming. A big reason this story spread so fast comes down to exactly how it unfolded. What should’ve been a routine Mass turned into something people watched happen in real time, whether they were physically sitting in the pews or just scrolling through their phones somewhere far away. Nobody’s said for sure yet why the crucifix actually fell. The footage shows the moment itself clearly enough, but it doesn’t explain what caused it. Could’ve been a structural failure, could’ve been something else entirely. That part remains unclear.
The archdiocese didn’t offer much beyond the basics. They confirmed the death, extended condolences, and that was it. No explanation for what caused the accident, no mention of funeral plans yet either. Just grief, stated as plainly as possible.
For people in the Guayaquil community, this is a tough one to sit with. A priest who d!ed doing the exact thing he’d spent years of his life committed to. And with that footage still circulating everywhere, a lot of people are left without any real answers about how something like this actually happens. Ecuadorian Priest D!es
