She recounted how her family was in Lagos for the Christmas holidays when Nkanu first showed signs of a cold, which quickly escalated into a severe infection. He was admitted to Atlantis Hospital and was set to fly to the United States the following day, accompanied by traveling doctors. A medical team at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was already prepared to receive him.
As part of the travel preparations, the doctors requested an MRI, a lumbar puncture, and the placement of a central line. Atlantis Hospital referred them to Euracare, which was touted as the best place to perform those procedures.
Chimamanda described how Nkanu was carried to Euracare in his father’s arms and was sedated for the MRI and central line insertion. While she waited outside the operating room, she suddenly noticed a flurry of activity as medical staff rushed in. Moments later, she was informed that her son had allegedly received an excessive amount of propofol, rendering him unresponsive and requiring resuscitation.
What followed was every parent’s worst nightmare: he needed ventilator support, was admitted to the ICU, suffered seizures, and ultimately went into cardiac arrest—complications she emphasized had never occurred before. Just hours later, Nkanu tragically passed away.
“I will never survive the loss of my child,” she reportedly said. Chimamanda Ngozi
