The motion, put forward by Hon. Uduak Ekpoufot, who represents the Etinan State Constituency, didn’t make it past the discussion stage as it lacked a seconder during the plenary session, which meant it automatically fell through according to the House rules.

As a result, Akwa Ibom—one of the Nigerian states known for its widespread d0g-meat consumption—will continue with the current situation, even as both local and global voices raise alarms about the health and ethical issues tied to this trade.

During the plenary, Hon. Ekpoufot brought attention to several troubling aspects of d0g-meat processing and consumption in Akwa Ibom State, arguing that this practice presents serious health risks and ethical concerns.  Akwa Ibom lawmakers

He went on to describe the various !nhumane methods often employed in the slaughtering of d0gs, including:

Strangulation

Blunt-force k!lling

Repeated bl0ws to the head

He pointed out that these methods cause immense suffering, which goes against global animal welfare standards.

2. Unhygienic Processing Conditions

The lawmaker highlighted the terrible sanitary conditions in various d0g-meat processing facilities throughout the state, cautioning that these settings allow for the spread of dangerous pathogens.

3. Public Health Risks

Ekpoufot warned that eating improperly processed d0g meat puts the public at risk for:

Rabies

Salmonella

Trichinella spiralis

And other harmful parasites and bacterial infections

He mentioned that several countries, particularly in Asia and parts of Europe, have already banned d0g meat consumption due to similar health concerns.

In an unexpected twist, no member of the House backed the motion, leaving it without a seconder—something that’s crucial for a motion to move forward in legislative procedures.

The Speaker then declared the motion officially rejected, wrapping up the debate without any further discussion.

With the motion turned down, Akwa Ibom will keep allowing the sale and consumption of d0g meat, a practice that’s deeply embedded in local culture but is facing growing criticism from public health experts and animal welfare advocates.  Akwa Ibom lawmakers

Analysts caution that without tougher regulations:

The state could attract international attention, particularly concerning its animal welfare practices.

This rejection has sparked discussions nationwide, with some locals defending d0g meat as a cultural delicacy, while others argue that health and safety should come first. Public health advocates are urging lawmakers to take another look at this issue, emphasizing that Akwa Ibom can’t overlook the increasing global restrictions on dog meat consumption.  Akwa Ibom lawmakers

For now, Akwa Ibom State is sticking to its long-standing tradition of dog meat consumption, despite attempts to limit it through legislation. With health concerns still on the table, the debate is far from settled, and public pressure might just lead the House to reconsider the matter down the line.  Akwa Ibom lawmakers
