There’s a growing wave of outrage sweeping through Tanzania and beyond as reports surface that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has seemingly appointed several close relatives and family friends to high-ranking government roles. This has sparked serious accusations of cronyism and an alarming concentration of power.

National sources indicate that the following appointments are under heavy scrutiny:

– Minister of Finance — her brother-in-law
– Minister of Health — her son-in-law
– Deputy Minister of Education — her daughter
– Special Seat Member of Parliament — her daughter
– Minister of Defence — a family friend who, it’s said, played matchmaker for the president’s marriage

– Deputy Minister of Works — her niece

Critics are raising alarms about what they see as a “family takeover” of state functions, which stands in stark contrast to the principles of merit-based governance. This situation brings up serious ethical and institutional concerns.  Samia Suluhu of Tanzania

Conflict of interest: When multiple family members hold powerful positions, it undermines the essential checks and balances, which can lead to a decline in accountability.  Samia Suluhu of Tanzania

Perception of elite capture: Citizens might start to see government resources and policymaking as being in the hands of just one family, which can erode public trust.    Samia Suluhu of Tanzania

Threat to institutional integrity: Concentrating power within a single family can compromise the independence of institutions and encourage nepotism over genuine competence.  Samia Suluhu of Tanzania

Political watchdogs and civil society leaders in Tanzania are urgently calling for a review of these appointments. Many are demanding transparency in the selection process and questioning whether these choices align with democratic norms or if they’re steering the country toward a hereditary-style governance model.  Samia Suluhu of Tanzania

If family connections dictate high-level government appointments, then who truly represents the public?

Will this consolidation of power lead to stability, or will it foster corruption and abuse?

Is this merely a “family first” approach, or does it set a dangerous precedent that could threaten democracy?

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan (GEJ) has sparked a new debate by asserting that the recent turmoil in Guinea-Bissau shouldn’t be labeled a military coup. Instead, he claims it was a situation where the current president invited the military to take charge. Jonathan is also calling on continental organizations to swiftly release the official election results, emphasizing that there was “foul play” during the voting process.  Samia Suluhu of Tanzania

In his comments shortly after the takeover news broke, Jonathan dismissed the idea that these events constituted a military coup. He stated:

The sitting president requested the military to take control.  Samia Suluhu of Tanzania

He believes this move was warranted due to the suppression of the official election results, which he described as stemming from “serious electoral irregularities.”  Samia Suluhu of Tanzania

Jonathan urged the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS to make the complete results public for the sake of transparency, aiming to restore credibility and calm.    Samia Suluhu of Tanzania

He pointed out:

“They can’t force the military out — but they must announce the result for the world to know who really won that election.”

In late 2025, Guinea-Bissau experienced highly contested elections, with opposing factions arguing over the official vote count.

The worrying outcome: potential widespread protests and political instability.  Samia Suluhu of Tanzania
