Goat arrested in Kwara State after vigilantes claimed an armed robber used juju to transform into an animal during a car theft operation.
Back in January 2009, officers at the Kwara State Police Command found themselves at the center of international news after locking up a black-and-white goat brought into an Ilorin station by local vigilantes.
The community watchmen swore under oath that the animal was actually an armed robbery suspect who had used juju to turn himself into a livestock animal to dodge arrest.
The whole drama kicked off when vigilantes cornered two guys trying to snatch a Mazda 323 sedan in Ilorin. While one suspect took to his heels and escaped, the watchmen claimed the second guy backed himself against a wall, mumbled some incantations, and morphed into a goat right in front of them.

Refusing to let the guy off the hook, the vigilantes grabbed the goat, threw it in their vehicle, and drove straight to the police station. They handed the animal over to desk officers as physical exhibit number one, demanding that the police charge the “suspect” for armed robbery.
You’d think the officers would have taken one look at this situation and sent everybody home. But no. They took the goat — this ordinary, four-legged goat — and locked it up. In a cell. Like a criminal. And from that moment, everywhere scattered.
The story jumped from person to person across the whole neighborhood faster than anything. Crowds gathered outside the station in their hundreds, all wanting to personally verify that yes, there was indeed a goat sitting in a police cell on theft charges. It got so loud that Reuters and BBC came knocking, and suddenly this one confused goat was making international headlines.
Audiences worldwide watched in absolute disbelief as pictures of a tethered goat inside a Nigerian police station circulated under headlines questioning law enforcement standards in West Africa.
The police spokesman at the time, Tunde Mohammed, had to address reporters, confirming that while vigilantes brought the animal in, officers were holding it briefly to figure out what was actually going on.
Outside the station, opinions were split down the middle—some locals insisted the black magic transformation was 100% real, while others laughed off the whole thing as complete nonsense and pure ignorance.
In the end, legal experts and human rights lawyers had to step in, reminding everyone that Nigerian law deals strictly with humans and doesn’t recognize juju or animal suspects. That 2009 incident has never really left Nigerian memory, and honestly it probably never will.
