In court, it was decided that Okorie would be granted bail set at ₦5 million, but there’s a catch: her surety needs to be a Level 13 civil servant. Plus, the surety has to provide solid proof of both residence and employment — which is why the actress is still behind bars.

The police have accused Angela Okorie of conspiring to defame her fellow Nollywood star, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, through a series of viral social media posts. In these posts, Okorie allegedly called Johnson a “blood-sucking demon” and claimed she was “chopping people’s destinies.”  Angela Okorie granted bail

Law enforcement officials claim that the posts constitute criminal defamation and cyber harassment, which are offenses punishable under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015.  Angela Okorie granted bail

Angela Okorie’s legal team has firmly rejected these allegations, asserting that the actress is innocent and had previously agreed to a ceasefire to prevent further public exchanges between the two parties.  Angela Okorie granted bail

Her lawyers argue that the situation is being exaggerated and caution that criminalizing online disputes among entertainers could create a troubling precedent for freedom of expression in the industry.  Angela Okorie granted bail

This case has ignited a heated discussion on social media and within the entertainment world. While some see the arrest as a necessary measure to combat online harassment and reckless claims, others contend that involving law enforcement in personal disputes only escalates conflicts into legal battles.  Angela Okorie granted bail

Legal experts point out that the outcome of this case could reshape the relationship between online speech, celebrity feuds, and cybercrime laws in Nigeria’s entertainment sector.

Currently, Angela Okorie is in detention as she awaits the finalization of her bail conditions.

Is this a bold step to finally put an end to online bullying in Nollywood, or are we entering a perilous time where every Instagram spat could land someone behind bars?
