BREAKING: Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré Dissolves Electoral Body, Calls It “Waste of M0ney”

Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré has dissolved the electoral body (INEC) responsible for organizing elections in the country, calls it waste of money and tool for foreign influence.

In a surprising yet bold decision, Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has disbanded the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling it “a waste of money” and a vehicle for foreign influence.

A government statement from Ouagadougou announced that the Ministry of Territorial Administration will now take full charge of organizing and managing future elections in the country. This significant shift in Burkina Faso’s electoral framework clearly reflects Traoré’s ongoing commitment to assert national sovereignty and lessen reliance on foreign entities.

Traoré: “We Will No Longer Waste Resources on Tools of Manipulation”

President Traoré, who rose to power through a military coup in 2022, criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission as a “redundant and costly tool serving external interests.”

“The so-called independent commission has never genuinely represented the will of the Burkinabé people. It has merely been a means to push foreign agendas and squander public funds. We are putting a stop to that,” President Ibrahim Traoré stated during a national address.

The Ministry of Territorial Administration, which already manages governance across Burkina Faso’s regions, will now oversee the entire electoral process—from voter registration to the announcement of results.  Burkina Faso President

Government officials assert that this restructuring will “streamline the electoral process and ensure that the nation’s democratic future is managed solely by Burkinabé hands.”  Burkina Faso President

However, critics warn that placing elections directly under government control could compromise transparency and democracy, concentrating too much power in the ruling administration’s hands.

This action is the latest in a series of moves by Burkina Faso’s military government to distance itself from foreign powers, especially Western nations.

Since taking charge, Traoré has:

– Kicked French troops out of the country,
– Strengthened connections with neighboring military-led governments in Mali and Niger,
– And championed the concept of a “sovereign Sahel alliance” to promote regional self-determination.

Analysts suggest that dissolving INEC aligns with Traoré’s broader goal of minimizing outside influence and rebuilding national institutions from the ground up.

While many Burkinabé citizens have applauded Traoré for his nationalist approach, there are concerns that this move could further postpone the return to civilian governance and diminish transparency in upcoming elections.

On social media, supporters have hailed him as “a leader who dares to challenge the system,” while critics caution that “replacing INEC with a ministry loyal to the military might silence the voice of the people.”  Burkina Faso President

Observers are keeping a close eye on how the transfer of electoral responsibilities to the Ministry of Territorial Administration will play out and whether it will genuinely enhance efficiency or simply lead to tighter control.
