Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government of Nigeria has just announced a ban on the creation and display of flower cash bouquets, cash towers, money cakes, and other similar artistic arrangements that use Nigerian banknotes, all in anticipation of Valentine’s Day 2026.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) made it clear that using naira currency for decorative or celebratory purposes is considered currency abuse, which is against Nigerian financial laws.

The CBN stressed that banknotes are meant to be used for transactions, not as decorations. According to the circular issued by the bank, using naira notes in bouquets, towers, cakes, or any other artistic displays — including practices like spraying or stapling — can damage the physical integrity of the currency and diminish its value.

The regulation states that defacing, folding, or altering currency for non-monetary purposes could result in penalties for those who break the law, including fines or sanctions under relevant sections of the Central Bank Act.

This announcement comes just weeks before Valentine’s Day 2026, a time when many Nigerians traditionally celebrate by gifting cash bouquets, money cakes, or custom cash art to their loved ones. These monetary decorations have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among younger consumers and party vendors in urban areas.

The CBN’s warning is aimed at preventing what it sees as the mutilation of currency notes, urging both citizens and vendors to strictly follow the law.  government bans flower

Supporters of the ban argue that maintaining the integrity of the naira is crucial for the country’s economic stability.

On the other hand, critics and celebrants believe that cash bouquets are simply harmless expressions of love and a cultural trend that adds joy to festive occasions.  government bans flower

Fashion and event vendors in major cities like Lagos and Abuja are worried about how this ban might affect their sales as Valentine’s Day approaches.

Here are some important points from the CBN directive:

It’s now illegal to use naira notes for making bouquets, cakes, or any kind of decorative art.

You shouldn’t spray, staple, fold excessively, or otherwise damage currency.

If caught, offenders could face penalties under Nigerian financial laws.

People are encouraged to think of alternative gifts that don’t involve messing with currency.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, Nigerians are reminded to plan their celebrations in a way that respects the legal guidelines about currency. The CBN’s position highlights a larger effort to uphold the dignity and longevity of Nigeria’s banknotes.  government bans flowers
