Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has announced that the daughter of the late former governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan would win an election out of sympathy without campaigning.
Governor oborevwori, who made the remark while speaking about the political chances of the former governor’s daughter, argued that the political structure available to his party could give her a significant advantage.
“We have the federal, state and local governments, and you’re saying we are not going to win? How?” Oborevwori said.
He added that denying the daughter an opportunity to contest could have attracted criticism, particularly following her father’s death.

“Assuming we didn’t give the daughter of the late former Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, a chance to contest, people would blame us after he died,” the governor stated.
Oborevwori further suggested that sympathy for the former governor could translate into electoral support for his daughter, even without an extensive campaign.
“The daughter doesn’t even need to campaign; out of sympathy, she would win,” he said.
The comments have sparked criticism on X, formerly Twitter, with several users questioning the suggestion that sympathy and political connections could influence electoral success rather than a candidate’s qualifications, campaign and support from voters.
Nigerians React to Oborevwori’s Comment

Another commenter, @Prof. White, posting as @Profwhite23, described the remarks as disappointing and called on Nigerians to defend their democratic rights.
“Personally I am quite taken aback, I can’t imagine the level of mediocrity and brazen disregard for the electorates. We have to stand strong as citizens of this nation to resist such level of disregard… It’s quite unfortunate,” the user said.
Meanwhile, @Eagle Eyes, posting as @Coolestheart1, argued that politicians’ comments should prompt Nigerians to take their civic responsibilities more seriously.
“Dear Nigerians, God Almighty had already exposed your politicians, if you like don’t do the needful wait for God to come down and help you,” the user wrote.
