Why is the price of fish inflated?

The Federal Government has identified high feed costs, inadequate access to quality fish seed and broodstock, poor financing and weak fish-health systems as major challenges limiting fish production in Nigeria.

The minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja while inaugurating the Technical Committee on Accelerating Fish Production in Nigeria.

According to Oyetola, the challenges had contributed to a significant gap between domestic fish production and national demand, with implications for food security, household incomes and foreign exchange.

He also identified post-harvest losses, inadequate cold-chain and storage infrastructure, gaps in research and innovation, weak data systems, inadequate standards and traceability, and poor market development as constraints to the sector.

According to him, “Domestic production remains substantially below national demand, with consequences for food security, household incomes and foreign-exchange resources.”

The minister said the high cost of production, particularly fish feed, was undermining farmers’ ability to expand output, while limited access to quality seed and broodstock was restricting productivity.

He added that weak fish-health and biosecurity systems, coupled with inadequate cold-chain facilities, continued to expose the sector to production risks and post-harvest losses. Click here to read more
