Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the ₦15.8 trillion saved from fuel subsidy removal and more than $100 billion in government borrowings.

Obi made the demand in an open letter titled ‘Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability’, following Tinubu’s visit to Akwa Ibom State. He said Nigerians deserve to know how the government has used the country’s resources to improve their lives.

Peter Obi questions Tinubu over subsidy savings, borrowing

In his message, Peter Obi congratulated Tinubu on spending a night in Akwa Ibom, describing the visit as an opportunity for the president to experience life outside Lagos and Abuja.

He urged the president to visit the remaining 33 states and engage directly with Nigerians on his administration’s achievements.

Peter Obi listed the ₦15.8 trillion saved from subsidy removal, over $100 billion in borrowings, increased tax revenue and additional government earnings as funds requiring public explanation.

He argued that Nigerians should not be left guessing about how these resources have been spent, particularly amid the country’s economic difficulties.

The former Anambra governor also raised questions about poverty reduction, education, healthcare, electricity and national security.

Obi demands answers on poverty, power and security

Obi asked Tinubu to disclose the number of Nigerians lifted out of poverty under his administration and how many out-of-school children had returned to classrooms.

He also demanded information about newly built functional primary healthcare centres and improvements in electricity supply.

The former presidential candidate recalled Tinubu’s promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the country’s electricity problem.

On security, Obi questioned what the government had achieved, noting that Nigeria still ranks among the countries facing serious terrorism challenges.

He stressed that Nigerians deserve measurable evidence of how public resources have translated into better living conditions.

Obi emphasised that accountability should remain central to governance, insisting that public officials must explain how they manage resources entrusted to them.

He wrote:

“Mr President, Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government.”

He added that the Nigeria he hopes to see would be built on accountability, transparency and visible improvements in citizens’ lives.
