WHY NATION NEVER FORGETS

Looking for Nation never forgets? today we remember Ajah David, Uche Promise, Ikechukwu Onuigbo and Aniche Oby, the 4 good boys Aluu community members murdered in cold blood through jungle justice.

Remembering The Aluu4

Sometimes the hard part of being Nigerian is knowing that whenever we experience a collective outrage, it is hardly ever sustained.

So we hiss and swear and pronounce God’s judgment on evildoers but never see to it that they receive their justice on earth.

The harrowing incident which took place at Aluu community in Rivers state is one of such reminders.

Four students of the University of Port Harcourt, Chiadika Biringa, Lloyd Toku Mike, Tekena Elkanah and Ugonna Obuzor were lynched by a mob in a manner reminiscent of the dark ages.

One of the four young men was on his way to collect what was owed him by a debtor and has three of his friends in tow. at the house of the debtor, a fight ensued.

The debtor raised an alarm, falsely labeling them as thieves. The community residents then did the unthinkable as the four students were dragged through the streets, stripped, beaten and then burnt.

The video of the incident quickly went viral and the condemnation of the act was widespread.

It has been four years since the Aluu 4 were brutally murdered. Suspects have been arrested and a case has begun but justice is still nowhere on the horizon. A year-long judicial strike, as well as a decision by the Rivers state government to change the prosecuting thing, have all but stalled the case.

Pray, in the absence of justice, how will jungle justice ever stop? There have been no less than six mob actions in Nigeria since the killing of the Aluu 4.

For a nation which is wont to forget, let us remember the words of Martin Niemöller

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
