Detectives say the whole thing actually kicked off during normal school hours right on campus, where Kontou allegedly showed the boy expl!c!t content. Court documents state she sent him frequent digital messages and pressured him into unwanted contact before the situation expanded during an official school activity.

The case escalated during an overnight field trip to Fitzroy Island near the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, where she allegedly engaged in improper contact with the student twice before another incident took place inside her quarters between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Following complaints raised by students to staff members after the excursion, Kontou departed Newington College, while administrators informed parents she was on approved leave. She subsequently worked temporary teaching jobs across New South Wales before obtaining a full-time position at Georges River College Senior Campus in Oatley, though none of the charges involve her time at the new school.
Police officers located and arrested Kontou at her home before presenting her at Sutherland Local Court, where a magistrate granted conditional bail requiring her to surrender her passport, report to police daily, and avoid all school grounds or unsupervised minors.
The legal proceedings prompted New South Wales Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car to order an immediate inquiry into the state government’s hiring process for Kontou, focusing on background clearance checks and police communications.
