Kylian Mbappé has claimed France would never allow him to continue playing international football until the age of 41, contrasting it with Cristiano Ronaldo’s extraordinary longevity with Portugal.
The Real Madrid forward made the remark while speaking to the German newspaper Bild about Ronaldo, the 41-year-old’s ongoing career and his own attitude towards playing until he is 50.
When asked if he could follow Ronaldo’s example and play on for France until he is 41, Mbappé replied with a laugh: “We have to be honest, given the country I play in, France would never let me play until I’m 41.”
While the comment appeared to be made jokingly, Mbappé was keen to state he did not have aspirations of continuing his international career in the same vein as the Portuguese legend. Instead he appeared to use the opportunity to praise Ronaldo’s achievements while recognising the difficulty in maintaining such a standard over such a long period.

“Cristiano shows that if you’re in good physical and mental shape, you can play at this high level for a long time,” Mbappé said, according to reports of the interview. “In my case, it’s not something I think will happen.”
The forward has spoken before about refusing to place strict limits upon his career. In an interview with France Football earlier this month, Mbappé said he could see himself playing “until 100 years” if necessary, but that his ability to continue would ultimately depend on how long he maintained his level. Ronaldo has long been one of Mbappé’s heroes, and the young forward has regularly named the Portuguese forward among those who inspired him as a child, along with Lionel Messi.
With Ronaldo continuing to play for Portugal at the age of 41, then, he appears to have set a standard for the next generation. It seems unlikely Mbappé, however, will attempt to emulate the example.
