A viral video of Wizkid’s father, Alhaji Muniru Olatunji Balogun, at a local mosque has sparked reactions on X, formerly Twitter, after a user questioned the singer’s wealth and his father’s living conditions.
The video, which shows the Wizkid’s father emerging from a mosque in a local neighbourhood as people help him with his shoes, prompted a debate about family responsibility, wealth, and the importance of maintaining ties with one’s community.
The controversy began after an X user identified as David O Police, with the handle @davidopolice, shared the footage and questioned whether the award-winning singer had done enough to improve his father’s living conditions.
In the post, he wrote: “I can’t say Wizkid is rich, brr! 😂 You say you get money, but you still no fit give your papa a good life? So why fak£ the lifestyle online? Blud left the old man in the trenches. See where Baba come dey pray now. 😭😂”
His comments triggered mixed reactions, with some Nigerians defending Wizkid’s father ’s decision to continue visiting his local mosque, while others questioned the assumptions being made about the singer’s relationship with his father.
Nigerians Defend Wizkid’s Father
Reacting to the post, an X user, @Lightb…, challenged the criticism, suggesting that the elderly man’s presence in the neighbourhood did not necessarily mean he was being neglected.
The user wrote: “This elderly man go to pay at his old Mosque every Friday. Just because he has money does not mean the people he once lived with are not humans. If you dey find X money or engagement no be by posting lies.”
Another user, @hottakeswithAj, argued that the location could be familiar to Wizkid’s father and that his presence there should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of poor living conditions.
The user said: “Thats likely where he has always prayed. You can see the SUV that brought him in the video. Look at how the children in the area surrounded him: Baba will give them money to buy sweets before he leaves. Many old people cling to their hood even tho their children can provide better.”
Similarly, @Orhue1…, who identifies as The Orodje of Okpe, urged critics to allow the elderly man to maintain his relationship with his community.
The user wrote: “No security, the man nah area father abeg leave him with his people.”
‘That’s an Old Video’ — Nigerians Question Wizkid’s father footage
Some users also questioned the timing of the footage and the conclusions being drawn from it.
An X user, @duff_manuel2, simply stated: “That’s an old video.”
Another commenter, @Ebiii_iii, pointed to the vehicle seen in the footage while challenging the criticism directed at the singer.
The user wrote: “U sha see that LX SUV Abi Mumu Dey look for engagement Oloribu.”
The reactions suggest that some Nigerians believe the video does not provide enough evidence to conclude that Wizkid has failed to provide for his father.
An X user, @isiakponah, shared this perspective, arguing that material wealth should not be the only measure of a person’s quality of life.
The user wrote: “This generation the only think u value is wealth and fame. Older generations put values on things that can’t be prized, like communal living. As long as his house in the trenches is comfortable, like he has constant light, appliances to make life easier and mobility, he is goid.”

What do you think? Should the lifestyle of a wealthy celebrity’s parents determine how people judge the celebrity’s success, or should older people be allowed to remain in the communities where they feel most at home?
