Just In: Opeyemi Famakin Questions Tribalism in Nigeria’s Fake Drug Crisis 2026

Opeyemi Famakin fake drugs comments challenge tribalism as he claims Kano ranks second in production, raising concerns over Nigeria’s counterfeit medicine crisis.

Opeyemi Famakin has called on Nigerians to pay more attention to the problem of fake drugs, arguing that ethnic divisions should not distract from an issue that puts lives at risk across the country.

In a statement addressed to the Igbo community, Famakin claimed that Kano is the second-largest hub for the production of fake drugs in Nigeria. He also said Nigerians know which state he believes ranks first.

“Dear Igbo people, let’s talk. The Number 2 hub of making fake drugs in Nigeria is Kano. We know the tribe that are in Number 1,” he said.

Famakin questioned why tribalism and what he described as Igboophobia continued to feature in public discussions when people from different backgrounds could all suffer the consequences of taking counterfeit medicines.

Opeyemi Famakin

“Are you guys not tired of using tribalism and Igbophobia? All of us are dying of fake drugs. What are you guys doing?” he added.

His comments bring attention to the dangers of fake and substandard medicines, which can leave patients without the treatment they need and, in serious cases, cause further harm or death.

However, Famakin’s specific claim about Kano’s position among Nigeria’s fake-drug production hubs has not been independently verified. Famakin’s claim about Kano’s position has not been independently confirmed, so it remains unclear whether the state ranks second in the production of fake drugs.

The problem itself, however, is a serious one. Fake medicines can be difficult to identify, and people who buy them may have no idea that what they are taking is not genuine. This makes it important for the relevant authorities to keep a close watch on the market and take action against those selling such products.

Famakin’s comments also bring the issue of tribalism into the conversation. His point is that fake drugs do not affect only one ethnic group or state. Anyone can become a victim, regardless of where they come from.

Instead of turning the issue into another argument about tribe, Nigerians need to focus on those selling fake drugs and how to stop them. People should also report any suspicious medicines to the relevant authorities.

At the end of the day, anyone buying medicine should be able to trust that it is genuine and will not put their health at risk.
