Kane’s first-place finish puts him ahead of several players who were also strong contenders for the award.
The England striker has built a reputation as one of football’s most reliable goalscorers. His ability to find the net regularly helped him stand out among the players considered for the 2026 prize.
Mbappé finished second, showing that his performances also earned him strong recognition from the voters. The Real Madrid forward remains one of the leading attacking players in the game.
Yamal took third place. The Barcelona star is among the young players attracting attention for his performances at the highest level. His position in the top three further highlights his growing importance in European football.
Rodri finished fourth, while Messi, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, came fifth. Georgia’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ranked sixth, followed by Ousmane Dembélé in seventh.

What does the Ballon d’Or ranking mean?
The Ballon d’Or is an individual award that recognises outstanding performances in football. Players are ranked through voting, so the final order reflects the voters’ assessment of their performances during the relevant season.
However, the ranking does not mean that the player in first place is automatically better than every other footballer in every situation. Footballers play different positions, perform different roles and contribute to their teams in different ways.
For example, a striker may be recognised for scoring goals, while a midfielder may influence matches through passing, defending and controlling play. Defenders also play an important role, even when their contributions receive less attention than goals.
Kane’s victory, Mbappé’s second-place finish and Yamal’s third-place position give fans plenty to discuss. Messi’s fifth-place finish also shows that the Argentine legend remains part of the conversation among football’s leading names.
Ultimately, the 2026 Ballon d’Or results provide a snapshot of how the voters rated the players’ performances. The ranking offers football fans a chance to compare the season’s biggest stars, while debates about who truly deserves the top spot are likely to continue.
