Don Jazzy reveals how he spent his first big music earnings
Veteran Nigerian music producer and record label executive Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has opened up about how he spent his first major earnings from music.
The music mogul disclosed that he initially spent the money on partying, including purchasing 50 bottles of champagne and going clubbing. However, he later changed his approach and began putting his earnings into investments.
Don Jazzy shared the experience during a recent appearance on the On The Grind podcast, where he also spoke about the financial benefits of making smart business decisions.
‘I bought 50 bottles of champagne and went clubbing’
Recounting his early experience with money from music, the Mavin Records founder admitted that he did not make the best financial decisions when he first started earning big.
He explained that instead of putting the money into profitable ventures, he spent a significant amount enjoying himself.
In his words:
“The first big money I got from music I lavished it. I bought 50 bottles of champagne and went clubbing. But I quickly coordinated myself and invested in signing new artistes. Now I don’t have to work ever again.”
According to him, recognising the need to manage his finances better helped him redirect his attention towards building businesses and investing in musical talents.
Don Jazzy shares advice for young Nigerians
The music executive also explained that his investments in record labels and other businesses have given him financial security.
He encouraged young people to develop the habit of investing their earnings instead of spending excessively on things that may not provide long-term benefits.
He further clarified that investing in a record label is not the only option, urging young earners to identify profitable businesses where they can put their money.
He said:
“You don’t necessarily have to invest in a record label, but the money you are making in your youth, invest it in a lucrative business as opposed to wasting it on frivolities.”
His advice centred on making financial decisions that can provide benefits beyond the period when someone is actively working.
