NDC supporters have taken over the streets of Calabar as the Peter Obi campaign gathers pace ahead of 2027. Party faithful turned out in large numbers for the launch of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement’s Cross River secretariat, undeterred by heavy rain.
The event brought together NDC leaders, local government coordinators and rank-and-file supporters, all mobilising behind presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, for the 2027 general election.
Cross River Joins The Obi-Kwankwaso Push
Jackie Wayas, National Convener of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, called the turnout proof that the state was ready to fight for a new direction. “Come rain, come sunshine, we are here,” she told the crowd.
NDC’s Cross River State Chairman, Goddy Akpama, did not hold back on the state of things. “Today, you walk the streets and can hardly see a Nigerian smiling,” he said, promising that the party would field credible candidates focused on economic reform and that votes would translate into real governance.
Stella Archibong, the party’s Deputy Governorship Candidate for the state, pushed supporters toward action over talk. “The new Nigeria is possible. Our vote is our power. Let’s vote NDC all the way,” she said.
Cletus Amawu, Chairman of the Planning Committee, closed out the event with a promise that the party would stay alert through the election season and make sure every vote counted.
The Calabar rollout fits a wider pattern. Obi has spent recent weeks moving from state to state, tying local NDC structures to his 2027 message. He was in Port Harcourt for a Rivers town hall where he leaned on Bangladesh, Indonesia and India as examples of what focused leadership can do for a struggling economy, and he was in Asaba for the opening of the Delta NDC campaign office, where he pushed the same line about judging development by what ordinary people feel, not by figures on paper.

None of this guarantees Cross River in 2027. Turnout at a secretariat launch is not turnout at the polls, and the state has voted APC in recent cycles. But NDC is banking on exactly this kind of ground mobilisation to change that math, one local secretariat at a time.
