Wike Sl@ms Coalition Critics, Boasts of Bringing APC and PDP Together

The FCT minister Wike spoke at the commissioning of the Gwagwalada Civic Centre, where he also urged residents to support President Bola Tinubu and candidates endorsed by the coalition in the 2027 elections.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised politicians questioning the existence of the Rainbow Coalition, accusing them of lacking the ability to unite their families and communities as he rallied support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mr Wike spoke on Monday, 2 November 2026, in Abuja, during the commissioning of the Gwagwalada Civic Centre and an interactive meeting with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gwagwalada Area Council.

The minister defended the coalition, which brings together political stakeholders from the two parties, arguing that political differences should not prevent leaders from working together in the interest of residents.

His remarks come as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with Wike using the gathering to seek support for Tinubu’s re-election and candidates endorsed by the alliance.

Wike attacks critics of Rainbow Coalition

Speaking at the event, Wike questioned the ability of politicians opposing the alliance to promote unity within their own communities.

He said: “Some greedy and selfish politicians do not understand what we call unity. They have no capacity to hold their space, they have no capacity to even hold their families, and they have no capacity to hold their communities. So they can open their mouths and say there is no Rainbow Coalition.”

The minister challenged those questioning the alliance to explain why politicians who previously disagreed could not put their differences aside and pursue common interests.

He described the political cooperation in Gwagwalada as a move away from confrontation, arguing that the FCT needed collaboration rather than unnecessary hostility between political groups.

Wike also commended political leaders in the area for prioritising the collective interest of residents over their individual ambitions.

Wike backs Tinubu, canvasses support for Aduda

Beyond defending the coalition, the FCT minister urged residents not to repeat what he described as the mistake of the 2023 general elections.

He called for credible representation at the National Assembly and specifically sought support for former senator Philip Aduda and other candidates endorsed by the Rainbow Coalition.

According to Wike, elected representatives should remain accessible to the people and understand the problems facing their constituents.

He also declared support for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, asking political stakeholders to move beyond public endorsements and mobilise voters across polling units, districts and communities.

Wike said: “On the day of the election, it will not be a day for market or fishing. It is the day all of us have decided to come together and demonstrate our strength through our votes.”

He added: “Go to the polling units, districts and communities and mobilise the people to vote for Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

What the record shows about Gwagwalada project

The political gathering also coincided with the commissioning of the Gwagwalada Civic Centre, a project that local political figures said had remained abandoned for 16 years.

A former chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Zakari Angulu Dobi, recalled that the facility was almost 80 per cent complete when he left office.

However, he said vandalism during the period of abandonment reduced its completion level to approximately 40 per cent.

His account points to the scale of deterioration the project suffered before its eventual completion. However, the figures are his account and have not been independently audited in the information available for this report.

The FCT PDP Chairman, Ismaila Mohammed Dogara, praised Wike for his development interventions, particularly the revival of the abandoned project.

The Aguma of Gwagwalada, Alhaji Muhammadu Magaji, also commended the minister, saying the completion of the facility demonstrated the importance of continuity in governance.

The commissioning marks the return of a public facility that had remained unfinished for more than a decade, although details of its total construction cost, funding arrangements and completion timeline were not provided.

APC, PDP leaders react as council seeks road intervention

Earlier, the FCT APC Chairman, Ishaku Tanko Yamawo, described the gathering as historic, crediting Wike’s intervention with bringing together political leaders who previously operated on opposing sides.

The FCT PDP chairman also praised the minister’s interventions in Gwagwalada, particularly the revival of the civic centre.

In his welcome address, Gwagwalada Area Council Chairman Kassim Mohammed listed road projects executed by his administration in Gwagwalada metropolis, Tungan Wada, Abum-pe and other communities.

He thanked Wike for approving a new facility in Gwagwalada but appealed for intervention on the road linking the Army checkpoint to the Specialist Hospital.
