Just IN: Anambra Confirms 1 Lassa Fever Case In Omasi, Activates Emergency Response

Anambra confirms 1 Lassa fever in Omasi, Ayamelum LGA, as the state activates emergency response and urges residents to stay alert.

There’s a confirmed Lassa fever case now linked to Omasi community in Ayamelum LGA, and the Anambra State Ministry of Health says emergency response efforts are already in full swing to contain it. The person affected is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, in Ebonyi State.

This came straight from the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, who spoke at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the ministry’s headquarters in Awka, where he updated health partners and officials on everything being done so far.

He explained that the state is beefing up disease surveillance and strengthening its public health response to make sure the virus stays contained to this one case. He also pushed hard on the need for residents to be more aware, saying people need to know what symptoms look like, how to protect themselves, and why it’s so important to speak up early if something feels off.

As part of tackling the outbreak, Obidike brought together an emergency meeting that had health partners present, among them officials from the World Health Organisation and Médecins Sans Frontières. The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Obiageli Uchebo, was also present for that meeting.  Anambra confirms 1 Lassa fever

Out of that meeting came the activation of what’s called the Incident Management System, or IMS — basically a coordinated structure that helps manage public health emergencies, keep surveillance tight, and ensure suspected cases don’t fall through the cracks.

Obidike explained that health workers will now be following up on the household in Omasi where the case came from, tracking down anyone who might have come into contact with the patient, and grouping them based on how exposed they likely were so they can be properly watched going forward.

He also had a word for residents battling fever or malaria-like symptoms that just won’t go away with treatment — see a doctor immediately, he said, and don’t try to manage it alone with self-medication. Getting diagnosed early and receiving proper medical care, he stressed, makes all the difference with Lassa fever.  Anambra confirms 1 Lassa fever

On how to stay safe, the State Epidemiologist, Dr Emembolu Chuma, told residents to keep their food covered and stored somewhere rats can’t reach, since rodents are one of the main ways the disease spreads. He also asked people to keep their environment clean so rats don’t get the opportunity to contaminate food or household items with urine and droppings.

Chuma additionally warned people to stay away from the blood or any body fluids of suspected or confirmed Lassa fever patients, reminding everyone to follow proper infection control steps and listen to what health professionals are advising.

The Ministry of Health is now asking residents in Omasi, across Ayamelum, and throughout the state to stay alert, work hand in hand with public health officials, and resist the urge to spread information that hasn’t been confirmed.  Anambra confirms 1 Lassa fever
