Oyo schoolchildren and teachers have finally regained their freedom after 56 grueling days in the forest. Read Governor Seyi Makinde’s emotional reaction.

For 56 agonizing days, nobody in Nigeria slept easy. The fate of those abducted Oyo schoolchildren and teachers hung by a terrifying thread, leaving the entire country holding its collective breath, just praying for a miracle.

That long, agonizing nightmare finally broke on Friday, July 10, 2026, when word came through that security forces had actually done it, they brought them all back alive.

Honestly, hearing this news just brings tears to your eyes and a massive sigh of relief. You can’t help but think about those poor primary and high school kids who were dragged out of the one place they were supposed to be safe, their own classrooms. It’s just a massive weight off everyone’s shoulders. Thank God they are coming home.

The news of their rescue has triggered massive tears of joy across families in the Orire Local Government Area. These children and their educators didn’t commit any crime; they simply went to school to learn and teach, only to end up spending nearly two months inside a dense forest at the mercy of heavily armed bandits.

According to official briefings from the presidency, the operational breakthrough happened through a highly coordinated, aggressive rescue mission launched by a joint security network. The silence finally broke when the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, took to X to confirm everyone was safe.

The biggest takeaway here is that the government refused to play ball, no ransom paid, no backroom deals cut. The bandits actually tried to leverage the kids to get one of their locked-up terror bosses released, but the feds didn’t budge.

Instead, our troops found their camp in the bush and launched a raid. A massive firefight followed. By the time it was over, a number of the bandits were k!lled and eight were taken into custody. They’re currently with the DSS being questioned so the authorities can dismantle the rest of their network.  Oyo schoolchildren and teachers

You could see just how much this meant to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, he was incredibly relieved and emotional during his live broadcast. For nearly two months, his administration faced intense pressure from anxious parents, civil society groups, and protesting student bodies demanding the safe return of the captives.  Oyo schoolchildren and teachers

“We want to thank our service commanders, the Police, DSS, the military, and the President for pushing so hard to make this happen,” Governor Makinde said. He admitted the rescue lifts an incredible weight off everyone’s shoulders, but noted the survivors will need serious medical and psychological support to process what they went through.

As much as we’re celebrating right now, the reality of how this started still stings. Back on May 15, gunmen on motorcycles tore through three schools in Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota, shooting indiscriminately and k!lling someone on the spot before dragging the kids including a two-year-old toddler into the bush.  Oyo schoolchildren and teachers

While having them back is a massive win for our troops, it’s also a stark reminder of just how defenseless rural schools still are. The 56-day nightmare is finally over, and these kids get to sleep in their own beds tonight.

There’s a lot to be thankful for, but the work to help them heal is just getting started. What concrete steps should the government take to completely eliminate school abductions in Nigeria?
